Weather Operating Policy
Communication of Delays or Closures
- Weather-related delays or closures will be posted in CourtReserve as early as possible.
- Updates will be provided throughout the day if conditions improve and courts can safely reopen.
- When appropriate, additional communication channels (such as social media, email, or the facility website) may be used to notify players of changes to operating status.
The Burlington Pickleball Center is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for both players and staff. During the winter months, cold temperatures can create unsafe court conditions—
including frost, ice, and reduced traction—as well as challenging working conditions for staff preparing and operating the facility. Rain, lightning and other weather conditions may also present challenges. To ensure safety and protect facility resources, the following guidelines apply.
Minimum Temperature Standard
- The Center will have a delayed opening when the forecasted or actual temperature at opening time is below 32°F.
- If the temperature drops below 32°F after sunset, the Complex may close early at the discretion of management.
- Temperatures will be monitored using the National Weather Service forecast and observations for the Burlington area.
Court & Facility Safety Assessment
Even when temperatures are above 32°F, the Complex may delay opening or suspend play if:
- Courts are wet, frosted, or icy.
- Shaded or low-lying areas remain slippery or slow to dry.
- Staff determine that conditions are unsafe for play or unsafe for staff to perform required opening or maintenance procedures.
The General Manager or their designee has final authority to determine when courts are safe to open or must be closed.
Staff Safety Considerations
- Staff will not be required to work outdoors when temperatures or wind chills are deemed unsafe or present a risk during prolonged exposure.
- Opening may be delayed, allowing for safer conditions for staff to inspect courts, manage equipment, and prepare the facility.
- The General Manager may adjust staffing levels, assignments, or operating hours during cold or hot weather to prioritize employee well-being while maintaining safe operations.
Programs & Reservations
- Lessons, clinics, and organized play will be canceled if the facility is closed due to weather or unsafe court conditions.
- When possible, programs may be rescheduled.
- Reservation fees will be refunded or credited in the event of a weather-related closure initiated by the facility.
Player Responsibility
Players are encouraged to:
- Dress appropriately for cold temperatures and wind (layers, hats, and gloves as needed).
- Use caution in winter conditions, especially when entering and exiting courts and walking in parking or walkway areas.
- Check for facility updates in CourtReserve (and other communication channels, if applicable) before arriving.
Severe Weather
In accordance with lightning policies set by the NCHSAA, in the event of lightning within a 6-mile radius of the facility, all play will be suspended immediately, and all individuals must seek safe shelter.
- Detection
- Lightning will be monitored using a reliable weather app or lightning detection system.
- Once lightning is detected within 6 miles, a Lightning Alert will be issued by staff.
- Suspension of Play
- All matches and play will be halted immediately.
- All individuals must evacuate the courts and seek shelter in a fully enclosed building or hard-top vehicle.
- Open structures like pavilions or under trees are not considered safe.
- 30-Minute Wait Rule
- Play may not resume until 30 minutes have passed since the last observed lightning strike or sound of thunder.
- Each subsequent strike or thunder restarts the 30-minute clock.
- Resumption of Play
- Staff will monitor the weather and give the official “all clear” once it is safe to resume.
- Weather updates will be posted in the CourtReserve app.
Note: Failure to comply with this policy may result in removal from the Complex. Safety is our top priority.
This policy is intended to support safe, consistent decision-making while balancing the needs of players, staff, and facility operations.
